HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY Sam!
It still did not feel like Christmas to me - no hot sunny days, no noisy cicadas, no Christmas pudding or turkey or family gatherings, no carols at the Pitts, no friends popping in, no morning walks with Janette, Penny, Di and Sue, no rushing aroung shopping, cooking, cleaning, no reading books by the pool!
Just sub-zero temperatures, snow and new, interesting and beautiful French countryside to enjoy and explore!
As you saw in my previous post, I awoke to a superb pink sunrise.
It had stopped snowing and the clouds had disappeared. The day was clear and sunny but a freezing -9.4 degrees at 9.07am!
This drawing of the village hangs on the study wall. You can see that the village was once walled.
Francois and Mathilde had to be on their way. Guess what the big brown paper bag Jean is carrying is for!
Yes, to carry all the fresh bagettes from the boulangerie of course!
Whimsical bird sculptures in the village square ...
The brightly-painted Cote-cours Creperie Pizzas-bar ....
The pretty christmas design on the window, with the reflection of the buildings across the road.......
Most of the houses and buildings are painted in a lovely muted pink which contrasts well with the terracotta or slate roofs.
A winter display - polar bears and emperor penguins together!!
A gorgeous fluffy black/grey cat slunking away! I miss my cats!
This is the rear of the property, backing onto the park, I like the shadows of the trees .....
..... the outline of a path can be seen underneath the snow .....
More polar bears and penguins - what is going on? !!
On the church wall, a sign pointing to the 15th century mill museum ...
Here is the old mill, but the museum is closed of course ....
The mill is an interesting and rather gorgeous building with its large conical spire, and the local stone is a lovely golden sandstone - very warm colours. The town boasts many beautiful stone walls and fences.
Who's been walking along this fence?
I came across this small river, running swiftly through a concrete channel, so I decided to follow it upstream ......
The water was rushing over a small waterfall, making a lovely sound ...
There are lots of welcoming Chambres d'hotes, Gites de France if you ever decide to take a trip to Marcigny ....
I love the way the snow outlines the tree branches .....
...and another one ....
Getting a bit further out of town now ...
Beware of the dog - je veille pour non maitre....
Back in the town centre now, at 31 rue General-de-Gaulle I came across the cosy cake shop Dominique Dansard : patissier, chocloatier, traiteur and spotted these iconic French sweet treats in the window- croissants and Buche de Noel!!
I was cold so decided to stop a while and have a nice hot coffee, and I thought I should sample one of their french cakes - a vanille eclair - delicious! The sumptuous almond and cherry Christmas flan I bought for Jean and Claude to thank them for having me ....
The boucherie selling local beef - this region is famous for the charelles breed of cow which produce superb steaks. even Santa likes it apparently!
Heading back to the house now, I was called to return for lunch!
Au revoir Ville de Marcigny!
