Boxing Day in Marcigny

dimanche 26 decembre

HAPPY 16th BIRTHDAY Sam!

It still did not feel like Christmas to me - no hot sunny days, no noisy cicadas, no Christmas pudding or turkey or family gatherings, no carols at the Pitts, no friends popping in, no morning walks with Janette, Penny, Di and Sue, no rushing aroung shopping, cooking, cleaning, no reading books by the pool!

Just sub-zero temperatures, snow and new, interesting and beautiful French countryside to enjoy and explore!

As you saw in my previous post, I awoke to a superb pink sunrise.

It had stopped snowing and the clouds had disappeared. The day was clear and sunny but a freezing -9.4 degrees at 9.07am!

This is the view out the front window to the village square and car park under a few centimetres of snow!

This drawing of the village hangs on the study wall. You can see that the village was once walled.

Francois and Mathilde had to be on their way. Guess what the big brown paper bag Jean is carrying is for!

Yes, to carry all the fresh bagettes from the boulangerie of course!

We had breakfast - the same as yesterday, then I went out for a 3 hour stroll around the village to take photos now it was all snowy! I will try to limit the number I download to save boring you to tears!!

Whimsical bird sculptures in the village square ...

A family's holiday gear stacked in the snow - a ski trip perhaps!

Three bad photos of me by me .....

The brightly-painted Cote-cours Creperie Pizzas-bar ....

The pretty christmas design on the window, with the reflection of the buildings across the road.......

Most of the houses and buildings are painted in a lovely muted pink which contrasts well with the terracotta or slate roofs.

Hotel de Ville - a huge town hall for a tiny town!

Pretty wrought iron lace work and shutters...

A winter display - polar bears and emperor penguins together!!

 A magnificent property ...

Next to this mansion, I saw a sign saying Parc Georges Poncet, so I went to explore ....

A gorgeous fluffy black/grey cat slunking away! I miss my cats!

This is the rear of the property, backing onto the park, I like the shadows of the trees .....

..... the outline of a path can be seen underneath the snow .....

Great expanses of white .......and snowy footprints .....

Back onto the street and more characteristic French architecture .... lovely!

Pretty christmas street decorations like this were attached to walls all over the village ....

See the icicles hanging from this car!

 Some very old buildings....

More polar bears and penguins - what is going on? !!

The catholic church where I went to the Christmas mass yesterday morning; Eglise St Nicholas ....

On the church wall, a sign pointing to the 15th century mill  museum ...

Here is the old mill, but the museum is closed of course ....

The mill is an interesting and rather gorgeous building with its large conical spire, and the local stone is a lovely golden sandstone - very warm colours. The town boasts many beautiful stone walls and fences.

Who's been walking along this fence?

I came across this small river,  running swiftly through a concrete channel, so I decided to follow it upstream ......

The water was rushing over a small waterfall,  making a lovely sound ...

There are lots of welcoming Chambres d'hotes, Gites de France if you ever decide to take a trip to Marcigny ....

A mansion with broken shutters needing a bit of TLC....

Another stunning property behind decorative wrought iron fence and gates  ...

I love the way the snow outlines the tree branches .....

here is another mansion .....

...and another one ....

Getting a bit further out of town now ...
Beware of the dog - je veille pour non maitre....

Back in the town centre now, at 31 rue General-de-Gaulle I came across the cosy cake shop Dominique Dansard : patissier, chocloatier,  traiteur and spotted these iconic French sweet treats in the window- croissants and Buche de Noel!!
I was cold so decided to stop a while and have a nice hot coffee,  and I thought I should sample one of their  french cakes - a vanille eclair - delicious!
The sumptuous almond and cherry Christmas flan I bought for Jean and Claude to thank them for having me ....

Across the road, I spotted this historic building, Maison du General Fressinet ne en 1767, where General Fressinet lived before he came to a grizzly end...

A lovely carved wooden window sill on this house.

The boucherie selling local beef - this region is famous for the charelles breed of cow which produce superb steaks. even Santa likes it apparently!

Heading back to the house now, I was called to return for lunch!

The back garden view from my seat at lunch ...

Time to return to Lyon, one last look out the front attic window over Ville de Marcigny.....

Au revoir Ville de Marcigny!
