Jeudi 2 Decembre
We woke to a fine day with some sunshine, but still very cold. Cathy and I went to Lyon's Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourviere via the funicular and marvelled at the superb interior of the church and the breathtaking views over Lyon
The basilica has the most spectacular, ornate interior - there are huge mosaic wall decorations, carved marble columns and statues, patterned marbled floors, vaulted ceilings and glorious stained glass windows, but more on this later.
.........the amazineg views over Lyon
Restaurant terrace tables and chairs!
We met Fabienne at the Place Bellecour, she helped us buy mobiles for use over here as we were unable to buy french sim cards for the schoool phones we brought. We arranged to meet her at the station at 2.45pm to go out to visit a homesick student and her host mother, a teacher, at her school about 20 minutes north of the city centre.
Already the snow is melting and going slushy or icy and very slippery.
In the meantime, we went back to the Paul Bocuse produce markets at Les Halles de Lyon to sample some of the delicious foods on offer for lunch. After all, Lyon is known as the gastonomic capital!!
Already there are lots of Christmas treats ( I wish I could bring some home!) and decorations in the shops, and the shop windosw and street decorations and lights are now appearing, as would be the case at home.
Mountains of tempting macaroons (1Euro a piece) in all different colours and flavours, even Litchi - I wonder if this is lychee flavoured?
Sea urchins, oysters, fish.
Escargot of course!
..... fromage, foie gras etc
We left the markets and walked to the station to catch the train to Fabienne's...
Fabienne drove us out north of the city to Neuville to visit a school - an old monastery - superb old buildings.
........ frozen soccer pitch.
Fabienne dropped us off in town and we made our way home on the metro via a crepe shop on the street - tor 3 Euro each, I had one filled with nutella and cathy had sucre et citron ( sugar and lemon). Yum!
Needless to say we didn't eat any dinner after that!!
See you later!
